It’s always surprising to hear certain media outlets and politicians deny the obvious and what scientists have been predicting for at least 20 years: the Earth is warming, and it’s due to human activity. Admittedly, this is most evident in the Bolloré media—a “journalist” named Pascal Praud claims it’s been hot before and that it’s not caused by humans; the same goes for Zemmour and the far-right crowd. I suggest you take a look at any monthly report of meteorology, and if you still don’t change your mind, then all that’s left is to call on Mother Nature or a sorcerer to convince you. In the meantime, we can only thank you for caring so little about the Earth we’re leaving to our children and grandchildren, who will have to cope with temperatures of 45 or even 50°. In a just world, you should be prosecuted for spreading false claims that have serious consequences for the Earth’s future habitability and biodiversity.
The solution is obvious to these circles: widespread use of split-system air conditioners and other cooling devices. It’s clear that no one would dispute the need to prevent temperatures from reaching 40° in the bedrooms of uninsulated homes—particularly in the suburbs—and thus to use cooling devices. The fact remains that these air conditioners create heat islands that raise urban temperatures by 0.5 to 2°C, thereby also increasing CO₂ levels and global warming. It is evident that politicians have been negligent for decades—all talk and no action. When we cut off aid to those who wish to install heat pumps, solar panels, or solar water heaters, we are undermining the future. When we authorize pesticides that not only cause cancer but also decimate biodiversity—which is also linked to global warming—everything is tainted. We’re making the Earth uninhabitable, and billionaires are planning to settle elsewhere, far away—even on Mars (let them go with Musk; that would do us some good). When a major fire breaks out in the Paris suburbs for the firsttime (Fontainebleau), we have to ask ourselves some questions. Our leaders’ blindness will come at a high cost—notably in the form of internal conflicts over water and access to safer areas.
In the meantime, I challenge these protesters to dispute these facts.
