Pollution and diseases, particularly cancer: the facts are stubborn but politicians are looking elsewhere!

In an exhaustive study (1), the authors show a continued increase in the incidence of cancers among young people. By studying the frequency of cancers since 1920 in the US, we observe a continuous increase in cancers, X3 for pancreatic cancers, kidney cancers, etc. Among young people, 9 cancers are more common among young people: colorectal, uterine, ovarian, gastric, testicular, etc. cancers. In a study of 1074 children, higher levels of maternal prenatal bisphenol were associated with a higher incidence of autism. Better, on experimental models, we show that this occurs through a modification of the activity of a well-identified target – a promoter with the barbaric name of CYP19A1 (2). Pancreatic cancer increases by 300% in men and 370% in women between 1990 and 2023 (3 and 4). However, the explanations for this situation are not linked to frequently cited genetics or tobacco but to living conditions since then, particularly pesticides, the consumption of which has increased massively since then.

At the same time, we observe that 3601 chemicals present in our body come from packaging or kitchen utensils. in fact, more than 14,402 molecules of this type are listed in biological samples (blood, urine, plasma, etc.) and several of these agents are known for their harmful effects, said to be very worrying because they are carcinogenic and mutagenic (5,6). Among them, the famous Bisphenol A used in the coating of bottles and cans and the European Union will perhaps ban it but it takes time for industries to find a replacement and so in the meantime we continue to create cancers. This is also the case for phthalates (baby food jars, plastic bottles, etc.) & non-stick molecules and many others. In drinking water, yes drinking water, we also find dozens of pesticide metabolites… so we never escape them. 97% of French groundwater is contaminated with 56 agents identified as toxic, including 12 particularly dangerous for groundwater (detailed maps of agents by department published by Le Monde -7). A striking example – triallate, could contaminate tablecloths with up to 42ug/liter, or 400 times the quality threshold. It was only banned in 2023 but its effects continue (7). All this comes at a high cost and not only through the suffering of patients and their families but on a purely financial/economic level. Treatments linked to these caused diseases cost the state much more than finding alternatives to pesticides.
