We have known for a long time that the earlier we detect cancer, the greater the chance of reducing it with the usual treatments – chemo and radio and different molecules. It has also long been suspected that a sedentary lifestyle makes things worse; physical activity ranging from walking to exercises that activate the cardiovascular system are beneficial. In this “meta-analysis” (a quantified analysis of the literature on the subject in epidemiology) the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle are observed. The German authors examined the results of 17 cancer centers around the world and therefore a population of 200,000 cancer cases. The heterogeneity of this type of population (some base it on the duration of TV, for example, etc.) makes things difficult and open to criticism. However, if we look at general mortality, we observe an 18% increase in mortality linked to a sedentary lifestyle. The results on different types of tumors are almost statistically significant and suggest a clear trend of harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle on different types of cancer, particularly colorectal and endometrial cancers, which the world authorities consider to be weakly demonstrated. However, this is probably due to the difficulty of carrying out analyzes on well-identified and homogeneous populations. Obviously, we need more epidemiology in this area! My opinion, given the compelling evidence of positive effects of activity on almost all diseases, there is a good chance that this also applies to tumors. Don’t hesitate, get moving!
