No one with a shred of morality can deny that the events in Gaza and elsewhere in Palestine constitute war crimes and genocide. The massacres committed by Hamas on 7 October cannot justify the death and starvation of an entire people, the death of thousands of starving infants and the destruction of everything that makes life possible in a territory, including hospitals and culture (1, 2, 3). They no longer even need to hide, because the whole world is looking the other way and has endorsed these crimes committed by Netanyahu, Trump and their ilk. People are calmly talking about expatriating an entire people for the umpteenth time to Africa (Somalia, Sudan); after all, they are used to it. they have already been displaced many times over the last 80 years during numerous Nakbas perpetrated by descendants of the Holocaust, or at least by people claiming to be such (forgetting that one does not speak on behalf of the dead). Ironically, the first version of Herzl, the father of Zionism, planned to create a Jewish state in Africa, because Palestine was already inhabited by a people.
It is important to read the testimonies of Holocaust survivors who refuse to be associated with any of this and who denounce genocide (4), as well as the testimonies of philosophers, UN representatives and the countless condemnations by the UN (Israel, the United States, North Korea, Putin, etc. being the only ones to oppose it), and the testimonies of the many doctors on the ground who describe horrors they have never seen anywhere else (see my previous blogs). All of this is unbearable. You don’t destroy hospitals, you don’t let babies die of thirst, you don’t shoot at anything that moves, and you don’t promise to build a Riviera in Gaza tomorrow while we turn a blind eye. It’s time to open our eyes and stop this madness.
The alliance between Israel and a large part of the Jewish diaspora with the far right (see the invitations to Bardella, Marion Maréchal, etc., after Orban and the entire elite of the global far right to Jerusalem) illustrates how much our Jewish morality belongs to the past. Yet the message is not getting through. Zeev Sternhell, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a specialist in Nazism and a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities, writes: ‘In Israel, a racism close to Nazism in its early days is growing’ (5). See also the analysis by an American Jewish journalist (6).
For those who still believe that it all began on 7 October, completely ignorant of history, I recommend testimonies such as that of a former member of the Palmach (the Israeli army before the creation of the state) describing how they drove peaceful villages into Gaza, committing massacres to make the population understand that they had to leave (7). You can also read the books by S. Sand and watch the films by E. Sival. You should also read the article by Chris Hedges, an American journalist and author of several classics on the United States. He details the historical path that led to this genocide, which is the final phase of a programme developed well before the creation of the state. Everything is written with precision, as evidenced by the signature of a great journalist and writer, and one has the impression of seeing before one’s eyes the unfolding of a programme aimed at creating a mono-ethnic state, emptied as much as possible of Palestinians (8).
Unbearable images have been reported by Médecins du Monde (9): hundreds of corpses being transported in carts (10). The front page of the New York Times (11) also features a photo of this armless child, as well as the photo of the year. Dr Pitti’s poignant testimony cannot leave anyone indifferent (12).
The rare good news coming out of Gaza is not from the front lines, but from Israel, where soldiers, sailors and airmen are beginning to understand that this war serves no purpose other than to allow a corrupt prime minister to remain in power (13). Admittedly, the primary motivation for these demonstrations is to bring back the hostages, but there seems to be a growing awareness that in Gaza, Israel is a pariah state that has committed the irreparable; a state condemned to be on a war footing for generations, with no prospect of salvation. Dominique Eddé, a great Lebanese writer, analyses the aberration of linking anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, but above all explains the link between the impulses of hatred and the massacres in Gaza (14). However, it does not take a genius to understand that these massacres will lead to more revenge from the Palestinians. How can we imagine the reaction of children who have seen their parents massacred before their eyes? Wanting to eradicate Hamas by massacring almost an entire population is absurd, unless their goal is precisely to trigger a cycle of perpetual war that will guarantee their hold on power.
It is time to react and remind the world that there is a Palestinian people, that they have a right to a land, and that the sharing of Palestine between Jews and Arabs is still possible, either in the form of two states or in the form of a binational state. There is no other solution! And whatever the warmongers and perpetrators of massacres may think, this solution will be achieved in the future, because colonialism is no longer fashionable and the Palestinians will not accept yet another Nakba without reacting.
