Please stop challenging the genocide in Gaza

I can’t understand how anyone could dare to question the genocide in Gaza! It’s understandable that Jews, like me, have sensitivities. But the truth is the truth and there is no point in hiding it. It is genocide, with all the requisite criteria.

We start with Guernica: more bombs were dropped on potential populations than Hiroshima and Nagazaki; more than all the recent wars (80,000 tonnes of explosives, some of them banned by conventions – remember Iraq and Syria – with 80% of buildings destroyed, on inhabited tents, on hospitals – on purpose, because this accentuates the Palestinians’ desire to leave – the ultimate goal of all this.

Journalists are killed on sight and on purpose, no witnesses. 203 murdered, 42 detained in Israeli prisons, 30,000 orphans in Gaza. Do you realise what that means? Thousands of children crippled for life. And most of the inhabitants, and therefore the victims, are under 15.

Fortunately, there are Jewish and Israeli MPs in the Knesset who dare to say: ‘The Jewish religion is based on the Torah, on respect for life. Where did you learn that out of 2.3 million Palestinians, not one is innocent? A two-day-old baby is not innocent! Who spoke like that? The Nazis. Whoever spoke like that is not worthy to speak in the name of the Jewish religion, in the name of the creation of man in the image of God’.

In Israeli prisons, tens of thousands of prisoners are held without trial, renewable every six months, and subjected to humiliating treatment. The images of freed prisoners are frightening and, after having generously exchanged them for hostages, Israeli prisoners are sent in their place. In which Western media were we able to see these prisoners when we have all the details (and rightly so) of the freed Israeli women?

Microsoft’s excessive use of AI enables them to do better, much better, than the Stasi: to have everyone in the loop. A joint study by the Guardian and +972 reveals that a special agreement with the air force (Ofek unit) enables Microsoft data to be used directly to bombard the army’s body of lawyers who persecute Palestinians, or the Sapir unit, responsible for the military intelligence directorate, etc. (6 and 7).

In short, they are convinced that the stars are aligned, thanks to Trump, and that they will finally have a state over the whole of ‘Arabenfrei’ Palestine. However, history always has surprises in store, and playing the role of the West’s advanced pawn in the East will never be easy. Setbacks will come at a cost. You have the right, my dear co-religionists, to bury your heads in the sand, but you will pay dearly for it, because morality always comes out in the end. Frankly, this is not what my pious Jewish grandparents in Egypt taught me. Out of respect for our ancestors (not mine, being in Egypt) who died in Auschwitz/Birkenau and elsewhere, keeping in mind precisely the universalism of the Jewish religion, which is not reduced to accepting everything done by a fascist power for which we did not vote.

Should we forget that Israel sold arms to the Afrikaners at the time of apartheid, and to the Serbs during the wars and massacres in Bosnia? An Israeli officer friend of mine told me: ‘It’s normal, because the Serbs helped the Jews during the Second World War. I replied: ‘Belgrade was the first Judenfrei city outside Berlin and Tito was Croatian. Israel behaves like any other colonial country, and it’s true that the Belgians, the Dutch, the Germans, the French, the British, the Australians etc., not to mention the Yankees, didn’t do any better and cannot give us lessons. But is that reason enough to imitate them? For my part, although I am an atheist, I prefer to retain the universalism of this religion, which has given so much to the world, rather than being attracted by a colonial country that does what others have done before it.

We are heading straight for an endless struggle between 2 theocracies – the illiberal Jewish one and the vast neighbouring Muslim one, which is partly dictatorial. The eventual outcome is far from obvious. Let’s imagine for 1 second the alternative, even if utopian – 2 neighbouring states, one predominantly Jewish and the other Palestinian-Muslim on the 1967 borders, with a federation in the long term. Utopia, certainly, but here the ‘Jewish genius’ could serve as a bridge between the Western world and the Arab/Persian world. That would at least be worthwhile and Israel would have a goal other than waging the 100-year war.

Finally, a telling image: was she originally Jewish, but not afterwards? We don’t know. But she symbolizes the Pietà and the suffering of the world.
