As expected, in this age of fast-moving news and images created everywhere, the truth is coming out even in Israel. Despite the efforts of Netanyahu’s far-right government, videos of the situation in Gaza and the massacres perpetrated by the Israeli army have finally appeared on local TV and in the leading newspaper Haaretz, as well as +972: the only newspaper edited by Palestinian and Israeli journalists (1). Soldiers return with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, telling horrific stories, unable to reintegrate into normal life and sometimes committing suicide (2). The reality of genocide and war crimes is no longer in doubt, and is exhaustively attested by NGOs, UN offices, doctors returning from hell, and even a former Israeli army commander among the hawks at the time, Moshe Yahalom. Highlighting in particular Amnesty’s dossier, based on hundreds of interviews and images, and even statements by political leaders, who put it bluntly – you have to kill all Arabs, they’re human animals (3, 4). Famine is a weapon used systematically, particularly in northern Gaza, where only a few trucks are allowed through, and gangs of thugs are allowed to confiscate all the food with their weapons and sell it on the black market – until Hamas kills a few of them (5,6).
Israeli historians remind us that what is happening is the fruit of a policy worked out over 80 years, with the October 7th massacres providing Netanyahu with a golden opportunity to implement the plan.
Yet the facts are stubborn: the solution is either a binational state – the most feasible solution under current conditions, with 750,000 settlers in the occupied territories, but which will result in apartheid in the short term and a state dominated by Palestinian Muslims in the longer term – which Zionist politicians obviously don’t want at all. In other words, a 2-state solution, which the short-term vision of successive governments forbids (9). Whatever the hawks think or wish, reality will catch up with them. The occupied territories in the West Bank can only survive on a constant drip-feed of state subsidies. No factories, no jobs, and we’re already seeing many non-religious and non fanatical settlers leaving these territories, and the state budget won’t be able to support these costs indefinitely. The internal or external political situation may change, and we can help with this by putting economic pressure on exports from there; as always, economics remains the sinews of war.
