Early Detection & Treatment of Autism & Questioning the Direction of Research : a podcast

The spectrum link is a large communication network involved in describing and reporting novel tools to understand and treat autism spectrum Disorders (ASD). Their correspondent has asked me to give a teamviews lecture on my observations and discovery on novel approaches and treatments of autism. I have taken this opportunity to describe several issues that I have been developing in the last few years and notably

I) the fact that ASD are born in the womb, this suggests that babies who will have later a diagnostic of ASD can be identified at birth by analyzing maternity data. Indeed, we have succeeded to do so with very important observations on the factors that in utero lead to ASD. Larger trials are scheduled hoping to lead to a general introduction of this approach in France to facilitate an early prognosis and therefore early psycho-educative treatments

II) the Neuroarcheology concept and its major implications on treating brain disorders. the demonstration of neurons endowed with immature features in the autistic brain and that of many other disorders implies that drugs capable of blocking selectively immature features are excellent promising therapeutic tools.

III) treating ASD with Bumetanide – I have reported in brief our efforts to use Bumetanide to treat children and adolescents with ASD using Bumetanide. after 9 successful phase 2 trials all over the world, we performed a final phase 3 that failed. BUT using machine learning, we are presently identifying children responders and planning to do another phase 3 with inclusion criteria restricted to responders.

IV) an emphasis on the conceptual poverty of genetics to understand and treat ASD. indeed, the dominance of genetics in ASD is now difficult to sustain in view of the large evidence that environmental , microbiotic, microbial and viral infections during maternity, epigenetic factors that are inherited for many generations without implying the DNA sequence and many other environmental factors are clearly instrumental and cannot be ignored.
